"What are the rules for airlines in a weather situation?"

Q: "What is the exact rule for passengers whose flight is cancelled due to weather? I have passengers stuck in PHL confirmed for an 3Aug departure being told they will not depart until 5Aug. How can the airlines get away with this?"
A: When a flight is canceled, delayed, or the passenger misconnects due to weather, it is considered a "Force Majeure Event."
In case of a Force Majeure Event, the airline is not required to provide or arrange for alternate transportation or to provide any amenities such as meals or hotels. In other words, with a Force Majeure Event, all bets are off.
The only requirement is that the airline provide a 100% refund to any passenger who requests it. This 100% refund also applies to non-refundable tickets, although far too many airline agents do not know this option exists.
